Looking into the history of the students' scientific society, the first research attempts began in the 19th century when the Kharkov Imperial University was founded. At that time, directions of students' studies were divided into three main sections: clinical, theoretical and hygienic. Clinical studies consisted of the latest scientific and clinical research in all branches of modern medicine, which were published in various editions and magazines and still have not lost their relevance.

In theoretical and hygienic research future physicians highlighted the issue of solving urgent problems of Kharkiv population, developing sanitary and hygienic measures aimed at improvement and development of the city.

In 1929, the "Scientific Student Society" was established in Kharkiv Medical Institute, in the creation of which professor Daniel O. Alpern played a major role. He became the first head of the SSS and was leading it for many years. By 1935 more than 500 students had worked in the SSS. In the same year, the 1st Ukrainian Conference of Young Medical Scientists was held, which was of great scientific and practical importance.

Gradually, SSS began to grow by the number of students. If in 1929 there were only 22 students, then in 2007 they became 2211. Forms of students' scientific studies expanded and improved. An important place in students' scientific work is taken by the latest information technologies, without which effective research is impossible.

A student scientific informational office, medical and technical design office were created. During the last 30 years, Professor Inna F. Kostyuk was the curator of the SSS.
