The department teaches two disciplines: radiology and radiation medicine. The studies of students are performed in the Ukrainian, Russian and English languages. Discipline «Radiology» has two sections: Diagnostic radiology (other name is Clinical radiology which is used in EU countries) and Therapeutic radiology, or Radiation oncology. Both sections are taught on the III year to all faculties. «Radiation medicine» is taught to the 5th year students.
For preparation of students to passing the test examination «Krok-2» and independent employments of students on the main clinical base of the department (Pushkinskaya Street, 82, Institute for Medical Radiology of NAMS of Ukraine, III floor) an educational room which can be visited from 15.30 to 17.00 to obtain consultative help of the teacher in charge is equipped. The department recommends to the students for preparation to practical employments to use educational text and illustrative materials on the site of the University. Areas of research Determining radiological semiotics of diseases (in particular oncology); a search of radiological diagnostic predictors of relapses of malignant diseases in remote terms; a search of new approaches to radiotherapy of malignant tumors with the purpose of increasing of its efficiency or/and decreasing of radiation complications. Under scientific guidance of Head of the department Corresponding Member of National Academy of Medical Sciences, professor M.I. Pilipenko 9 doctoral theses and 18 Ph.D. theses have been executed and defended and at present 2 doctoral theses and 3 Ph.D. theses are executed. Professor M.I. Pilipenko is the founder and editor-in-chief of the Ukrainian Journal of radiology, founder and Honored chairman of Ukrainian Society of Radiation Oncologists, coordinator of projects of technical help of IAEA in the improvement of quality and safety in the system of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology of Ukraine. Internal continuous education and professional improvement of pedagogical staff of the department is carried out through weekly conferences, on what abstract lectures (articles from 10 leading scientific journals from diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology, radiation safety) are listened to and considerations of current cases from practice are performed. The department has an electronic library for the last 10 years of such journals: American Journal of Radiology; British Journal of Cancer; British Journal of Radiology; Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers, Prevention; Cancers; European Journal of Oncology Nursing; European Journal of Radiology; Evidence-Based Oncology; International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology and Physics; Journal of Clinical Oncology; RadioGraphics; Radiology; Radiotherapy and Oncology; Seminars in Oncology Nursing. In addition, electronic library of slides from all sections of radiology was created which is used for preparation to lectures for the students and interns.
At the department residency and post-graduate course are opened.
