Organizational forms. Lectures are problematic, accompanied by a demonstration of the patient or medical history. The classes use technical teaching aids: a multimedia projector, an interactive multimedia system, etc. Practical classes are conducted in the form of clinical analysis, accompanied by a demonstration of the patient.

Educational and methodical support. During their studies, students use textbooks with the stamp of the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science: "Occupational diseases" (1998, 2003, 2011, 2015, 2017); "Occupational diseases" (2012) for foreign students with Russian language teaching; "Occupational diseases" (2005, 2016) for foreign students with English language teaching; "Internal diseases" for students of the Faculty of Dentistry (2002, 2015). A sufficient number of textbooks in the university library allows each student to receive a copy before the cycle.

Innovative technologies. Visual materials from the disciplines taught at the department have been developed. These materials are demonstrated to students in lectures and practical classes, provided on electronic media for extracurricular independent work. In independent work of students both in practical classes under the guidance of the teacher, and in extracurricular time, multimedia educational and educational-controlling programs are used. When teaching the material, students are provided with an algorithm for finding additional information with links to paper or electronic publications, including Internet resources. In the conditions of distance learning, the teachers of the department create separate components of electronic courses and conduct lectures and practical classes on the platform MOODLE, ZOOM and Google Meet; send messages to students, develop and test assignments, keep electronic journals of grades, adjust course resources.

At the department, classrooms and lecture halls are equipped with modern interactive mobile and stationary multimedia training video panels, which are actively used in classes in the disciplines "Internal Medicine", "Occupational Diseases", "Military Field Therapy". Audio, photo and video materials are additionally provided to deepen students' knowledge. Modern video materials and the above technical capabilities make it possible to combine the demonstration of the process with testing students' understanding of the proposed information.

The Department of Internal and Occupational Diseases was established in 1977 on the basis of the Clinical Department of the Kharkiv Research Institute of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Diseases.

From 1977 to 2009, the department was headed by (and currently serves as head) a follower of the Kharkiv Therapeutic School, a student of Academician L. T. Malaya, d. med. s, prof. Inna Fyodorovna Kostyuk. Since 2009 the head of the department is d. med. s, prof. Valeriy Andriyovych Kapustnyk — a graduate of the Kharkiv Medical Institute, who successfully passed the way from the assistant, Ph.D. to Professor, Doctor of Medicine, First Vice-Rector and Rector of Kharkiv National Medical University.

At the time of its foundation, the department had 5 teachers, and today — 18.

The course of internal medicine has been taught to students of the medical faculty since 1977, the dental faculty since 1981, the sanitary-hygienic (medical-preventive) faculty since 1984. Students of all medical faculties, including English-medium, study occupational diseases.

In 1991, the department was granted the status of a reference for teaching occupational diseases in medical universities of Ukraine. Employees of the department (Prof. V. A. Kapustnyk, Prof. I. F. Kostyuk) are the authors of curricula and programs of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on occupational diseases for students, interns and masters (1992, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2007, and 2012). These works reflect the modern idea of occupational pathology as a science and clinical discipline, its role and place in preventive medicine.
