ACADEMIC WORK


The Department works within the system of post-graduate education at the Research and Training Institute for Postgraduate Education of Kharkiv National Medical University.


The training is carried out in accordance with the state program in Obstetrics and Gynecology (2014), serving as the basis for the elaboration of working program and curriculum plan for interns, annually revised and supplemented to reflect changes in training. For the first time ever, the Department introduced training courses in Pediatric Gynecology for interns, obstetricians-gynecologists, pediatric gynecologists, pediatric surgeons, family doctors, pediatricians, adolescent medicine specialists. Since 2012-2013 annually the Department has been providing post-graduate training, particularly thematic advanced training in "Abnormal development and dysfunction of the female reproductive system", "Topical problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology", "Ultrasound diagnosis in Perinatology and Pediatric Gynecology", "Employment of advanced reproductive technologies in medical practice", "Minimally invasive surgery in Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology", "Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology in pediatric practice", "Topical problems of Pediatric Gynecology in family practice"; precertification training and specialization in the specialty "Pediatric Gynecology", precertification training in the specialty "Obstetrics and Gynecology", advanced training for doctors at the place of work at clinical centers of the Department.


There are courses for interns in related specialties, namely "Pediatric Gynecology" for pediatricians and "Emergency conditions in Obstetrics and Gynecology" for surgeons.


The training process involves 360 guidelines for interns. Since 2016-2017 the Department has taught sixth-year students of the third medical faculty (Pediatrics) in specialty "Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology" followed by a state exam. Since 2017/2018, the Department has also taught a course of “Women's Health” to interns of general practice-family medicine. The training is provided in line with current guidelines; lectures and practical classes are taught using the latest teaching aids, including multimedia equipment, on-line information network, updated repository of visual aids using training simulated  models and an own computer class.


In order to improve the training process, the Department cooperates with the Departments of Pediatrics, Foreign Languages, Ukrainian Language, Dentistry and Pediatric Surgery of KhNMU, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of O.O.Bogomolets Bukovinian Medical University, National Medical University in the following areas: perinatology, modern methods of prevention, diagnosis and treatment in Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatric Gynecology, intrauterine fetal hypoxia and resuscitation in the delivery room based on the orders of the Ministry of Heаlth of Ukraine and new teaching materials and European and international protocols.


To further improve the training of interns, students and trainees the Department employ 9 software packages, including 6 those elaborated by the Department staff, used in training and testing regimes; repository of training videos, including 11 made by the staff. To improve the quality of teaching, the Department devised methodological guidelines approved by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and KhNMU regarding inflammatory diseases of the reproductive system, sexual education, acute abdomen, gynecologic bleedings, genital anomalies, prenatal care, fetal growth retardation, which are widely used in the educational process.



RESEARCH AREAS


The theme of scientific research carried out at the Department is “Impairment of female reproductive system development and function at different age periods”. The research conducted by the Department aims to investigate obstetric and gynecological conditions from birth to menopause, including Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology, Perinatology, especially habitual miscarriage, inflammatory genital diseases, infertility, menopausal disorders. In 2012-2018, the Department staff prepared 6 Master’s and 4 PhD theses, 3 PhD theses are being worked on at the moment. The Department has received 16 declarative patents of Ukraine for utility models, published datasheets, provided innovation and received acts for introduction of scientific developments into the health care system.



SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION


The Department cooperates with the European and World Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (EUROPAG, IFIPAG); the International Society of Gynecological Endocrinology (ISGE); the International Society of Contraception (ISC), the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of the UK (RCOG); the National Association of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology of Bulgaria, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Italy, Serbia, Argentina, Czech Republic, Germany, Australia. The framework of international cooperation involves scientific and practical work on the theme "Youth program: healthy lifestyle". Since 2012, the Department staff took part in the 29th European Congress on Reproduction and Embryology (UK, 2013), the 23th International Conference "Reproductive technology today and tomorrow" (RF, 2013), the World Congress of Gynecological Endocrinology (Italy, 2014, 2016, 2018), International Conferences "Pressing problems in Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology" and "The nature of women" (Kazakhstan, 2014, 2016, - on-line), The International Gynecological Conference (Zakopane, Poland, 2015), the 17th and 18th World Congress of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (Hong Kong, 2013, Italy, 2016), the 13th, 14th and 15th European Congress on Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology: UK, 2014; Italy, 2016 (where Prof. I.A. Tuchkina won the prize for the best presentation); Lithuania, 2017, the 1st EuroPAG Trainee Congress (Germany, 2019).


The Department regularly conducts regional and interregional conferences and symposia "Pressing problems in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology" (1 per quarter). In 2014, the Department introduced a system for distance national and international video conferences: in 2015 it organized the International Online Conference and Teleconference "Ukraine - EAST-WEST" on the issues of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology, dedicated to the 210th anniversary of KhNMU, and Republican Online Teleconferences Kharkiv-Zaporizhzhya in 2016 and Kharkiv-Kazakhstan in 2017. The staff of the Department took an active part in the work of the Scientific symposium with international participation "Hypomenstrual syndrome in adolescent girls (pathogenesis, prevention, remote consequences)", held on 24.05.2017 in Kharkiv, in the Plenums of obstetricians-gynecologists of Ukraine with international participation (Professor I.O. Tuchkina was a moderator of the panel session; 12 reports from the staff of the Department), Odessa, 2017, Kiev, 2016, 2018. In September 2017, the Department held an international conference devoted to the memory of Professor M.G. Bogdashkin and the 5th anniversary of the Department with online broadcasting and participation of foreign specialists, a report on which has been posted on the website of the International Federation of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology (FIGIJ), - 2018.


The Department staff conducts extensive work with young scientists. Interns, students engaged in the work of the Scientific Society and young scientists of the Department take an active part in the annual youth science festivals "Medicine of the Third Millennium" and international scientific forums ISIC at KhNMU. Since 2012 the young specialists have presented over 30 oral and poster presentations, published 35 abstracts, won the 1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes for participating in these research events. In 2016, they won the 1st prize for the best scientific paper presented at the Republican Conference of Young Scientists (Ternopil, 2016), received diplomas for participation in the Republican Olympiads in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.



CLINICAL WORK


The Department provides medical, preventive, organizational and methodological work; renders scientific/methodological and medical aid to branch departments, specialized departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology, obstetrician-gynecologists, reproductive scientists, pediatricians, pediatric gynecologists and surgeons. The department supervises the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Service in Kharkiv region (Professor I.O. Tuchkina is a Visiting Chief Specialist in Pediatric and Adolescents Gynecology of the Kharkiv region, Vice-President of Ukrainian Association of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecologists). Professors and associate professors conduct weekly rounds in clinical centers, the staff provides counseling, holds clinical and anatomopathological conferences, medical boards. They manage outpatients and pregnant, as well as inpatients with gynecological abnormalities of all ages at inpatient departments of clinical centers. Together with interns, the Department staff is engaged in sanitary and educational work in Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region for medical health practitioners and the public on issues of sexual education, healthy lifestyle and prevention of gynecological diseases in children, adolescents and women. The staff provides highly qualified counseling, medical assistance, preventive examinations of woman and adolescent girls for early detection of gynecological diseases and unintended pregnancy among minors and preservation of their reproductive potential.


According to the plans of the Department of Health of Kharkiv Regional State Administration, the Department quarterly conducts regional and city conferences and training seminars within the framework of the Specialist's Day: "Topical problems of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Pediatric Gynecology" for health care practitioners.
